in 2004 , I had a spiritual emergence psychosis . I caught wind of young neo pagans getting interested in reiki, a kind of exotic therapeutic touch with obfuscated or obscure origins in Japan, and immediately from my nascent childhood having been brought up in the 1990s began connecting it in my head to Shinto. I figured it must have connected somehow. I was also aware of spiritualism in the back of my mind. I saw talk of "reiki guides" and this sort of thing. I still think the lot of them are a bunch of ignoramuses , but far from immediately dismissing what they were claiming to be capable of I became intrigued in it. but reiki being rather expensive for a young college student, deigned to instead attempt to initiate by myself. I didn't find this particularly peculiar, because this is what the original reiki master, a Dr. Usui, did himself. However, the story of him "meditating" and then suddenly having this power of laying on of hands and whatnot, didn't add up to me.. and so being acutely aware of the thick of air of paranormal interest throughout my upbringing both in my own life and in the mainstream media, again, I drew immediate connections to spiritualism and spirit communion. For this, I have Whitley Strieber to thank, author of Communion. You may have seen the film of the same name with Christopher Walken.. but I had read the book first taken out from my local suburban city library. So, I had this idea planted into my head from a young age.
And.. yeah... I initiated the self-loss. and became psychotic almost immediately, and was hospitalized. The ability to channel came suddenly and I was in the eye of the storm..
Now, in 2013, I study the anthropology that has been written about this extreme initiatory process, as it is known in the ancient shamanic cultures of Korea and Vietnam. I have found little information out of Japan, since that country has changed a lot since the war. but, Vietnam and Korea are still very traditional. and that is where you will find some of the best scholarship.
Thanks for any interest you have in my story.
